- 3.1Environmental history studies the relationship between human beings and nature: how people used forests, rivers and land, and how changes in the environment affected their lives. For example, the Chipko movement (1973) in the Garhwal Himalaya (present-day Uttarakhand), in which villagers hugged trees to stop them being felled, is an important subject of environmental history. Revise: Ideas of History (ইতিহাসের ধারণা) →

- 4.1Newspapers and periodicals are called the mirror of their times because they record events, opinions and social conditions as they happened. ‘Somprakash’ (1858), edited by Dwarakanath Vidyabhushan, discussed many political and social questions and criticised injustice. Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay's ‘Bangadarshan’ (1872) spread new ideas through writings on literature, history and science and helped awaken national feeling. The ‘Hindu Patriot’ brought the sufferings of the indigo cultivators before the public. From advertisements, readers' letters and reports we also learn about prices, fashions, education and public opinion. However, each paper reflected the views of its editor or of the class it served, so its reports may be biased. Government control and censorship also limited what papers could print. Therefore historians compare different papers and other sources before drawing conclusions. Revise: Ideas of History (ইতিহাসের ধারণা) →
- 4.2Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar was one of the greatest social reformers of nineteenth-century Bengal, and his reforms were rooted in humanism. Moved by the miserable condition of child widows, he showed from the Hindu shastras that widow remarriage was permitted. In spite of fierce opposition from orthodox Hindus, his petitions and campaign led to the Hindu Widows' Remarriage Act of 1856, and he arranged several widow marriages at his own expense. He also campaigned against polygamy and child marriage. Vidyasagar was a pioneer of women's education: he was closely associated with the girls' school founded by J.E.D. Bethune in 1849 and set up many girls' schools in the districts of Bengal. However, widow remarriage did not become popular in society, and his campaign against polygamy did not produce a law. Even so, his courage made him a symbol of rational and humane reform. Revise: Reform: Characteristics and Observations
- 4.3Titu Mir (Mir Nisar Ali) led the Wahabi movement in Bengal in the area around Barasat. At first it was a religious reform movement that asked Muslims to give up un-Islamic practices and follow the pure teachings of Islam. Soon, however, it turned against the local zamindars and indigo planters who oppressed the poor peasants; one zamindar even imposed a tax on beards. Titu Mir organised poor peasants and weavers, most of them Muslims, against these exploiters. In 1831 he built a bamboo fort at Narkelberia and declared the end of British rule in the area. A British force destroyed the fort in November 1831, and Titu Mir was killed in the fighting. Some historians call the movement communal because it clashed with Hindu zamindars, but many others see it as a peasant struggle against zamindari and colonial oppression in a religious form. Thus it combined religious reform with agrarian protest. Revise: Resistance and Rebellion: Characteristics and Analyses (প্রতিরোধ ও বিদ্রোহ) →
- 4.4The Indian Association (Bharat Sabha) was founded on 26 July 1876 in Kolkata by Surendranath Banerjee and Anandamohan Bose. Unlike the British Indian Association, which mainly represented zamindars, it spoke for the educated middle class and aimed to unite Indians across the country on common political issues. When the maximum age for the Indian Civil Service examination was cut from 21 to 19 in 1876, it launched an all-India agitation, and Surendranath toured many parts of India to build public opinion. It also demanded that the examination be held simultaneously in India and England. It protested against the Vernacular Press Act and the Arms Act of 1878, supported the Ilbert Bill, and took up the cause of tenants and of labourers in the Assam tea gardens. In 1883 it organised a National Conference in Kolkata with representatives from different provinces. For these reasons the Indian Association is regarded as a forerunner of the Indian National Congress (1885). Revise: Early Stages of Collective Action: Characteristics and Analyses
- 4.5Rabindranath Tagore felt that colonial education was mechanical, based on rote learning inside closed classrooms and cut off from nature and life. In his story 'Tota Kahini' (The Parrot's Training) he mocked such education by comparing it to the training of a caged bird. He believed that a child learns best in close contact with nature, with freedom and joy, so in 1901 he set up the Brahmacharyashram at Santiniketan, where classes were held under the open sky. For the all-round growth of the learner he stressed teaching through the mother tongue, along with music, painting, drama and crafts. To bring together the cultures of the East and the West, he founded Visva-Bharati in 1921, whose motto means 'where the whole world meets in a single nest'. He also believed that education must serve the villages, so in 1922 he set up Sriniketan for rural reconstruction with the help of Leonard Elmhirst. Thus his ideas offered a humane, Indian alternative to colonial education. Revise: Alternative Ideas and Initiatives (From mid-19th Century to the Early 20th Century): Characteristics and Observations
- 4.6After the First World War, rising prices, low wages and long working hours caused deep discontent among Indian workers. To organise them at the national level, the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) was founded at Bombay in 1920 with Lala Lajpat Rai as its president. Workers took part in the Non-Cooperation movement, and many strikes broke out in mills, railways and plantations. From the mid-1920s communists gained influence in the trade unions, and the Workers' and Peasants' Parties worked to organise labour. The Bombay textile strike of 1928, led by the Girni Kamgar Union, involved about one and a half lakh workers and lasted nearly six months. Alarmed by this, the government passed the Trade Disputes Act (1929) and arrested left leaders in the Meerut Conspiracy Case (1929). In 1929 the AITUC also split between moderates and radicals, which weakened the movement for a time. Yet by the end of the decade the workers had become an organised and politically conscious force. Revise: Peasant, Working Class and Left Movements in 20th Century India: Characteristics and Observations
- 4.7Students were among the most active participants in India's freedom struggle. During the Swadeshi movement (1905) they boycotted foreign goods and picketed shops; when the Carlyle Circular tried to stop them, they formed the Anti-Circular Society, and national schools and colleges were set up for them. In the Non-Cooperation movement (1920-22) thousands of students left government schools and colleges and joined national institutions or worked as volunteers. Many students joined revolutionary groups such as the Bengal Volunteers, and on 8 December 1930 Benoy Basu, Badal Gupta and Dinesh Gupta attacked Writers' Buildings in the famous 'Alinda Yuddha'. In 1936 the All India Students' Federation was formed to organise students at the national level. During the Quit India movement (1942) students went on strike, led processions and carried on underground work. In February 1946 Hindu and Muslim students of Calcutta together observed Rashid Ali Day against the sentence passed on an INA officer. Thus students gave energy, courage and sacrifice to the national movement. Revise: Movements Organised by Women, Students and Marginal People in 20th Century India: Characteristics and Analyses
- 4.8The partition of Bengal in 1947 created one of the biggest refugee problems in Indian history. Unlike Punjab, where most of the exchange of population took place quickly in 1947-48, Hindu refugees kept coming from East Pakistan in waves for many years, especially after the riots of 1950 and 1964. Millions of homeless people crowded into relief camps such as Cooper's Camp at Ranaghat, onto railway platforms and into squatter colonies like Bijoygarh in and around Calcutta. This sudden rise in population caused serious shortages of food, housing, land and jobs and put great pressure on the economy of West Bengal. The Nehru-Liaquat Pact of 1950 tried to protect minorities and check the flow, but it had limited success. The government gave loans and land and resettled many refugees outside Bengal, in the Andaman Islands and, from 1958, in the Dandakaranya project, though many found life there very hard. At the same time the refugees became an important force in the politics of West Bengal and enriched its social and cultural life. Thus the refugee problem shaped West Bengal for decades after independence. Revise: Post-Colonial India: Second Half of the 20th Century (1947-1964)

- 5.1Background: In the first half of the nineteenth century European planters made Bengal a major centre of indigo production to meet the demand for dye in the British textile industry. Causes: The planters forced the ryots to accept an advance called dadan and to grow indigo on their best land. The price paid for indigo was far below the cost of growing it, so the ryots fell deeper into debt every year. Ryots who refused were beaten and locked up in the planters' factories (kuthi), their houses were burnt and their cattle seized. The police and magistrates usually sided with the European planters, so the ryots got no justice. Course: In 1859 the ryots of Chaugachha in Nadia, led by Bishnucharan Biswas and Digambar Biswas, refused to grow indigo. The revolt soon spread to Jessore, Pabna, Khulna and other districts, where peasants refused to sow indigo and attacked indigo factories. Hindu and Muslim peasants fought side by side. Role of the educated class: Harish Chandra Mukherjee's ‘Hindu Patriot’ published the sufferings of the ryots. Dinabandhu Mitra's play ‘Nildarpan’ (1860) exposed the planters' tyranny, and Rev. James Long was fined and imprisoned for publishing its English translation. Significance: The government appointed the Indigo Commission in 1860, which admitted the injustice of the system. It was then declared that ryots could not be forced to grow indigo, and indigo cultivation in Bengal steadily declined. The revolt showed the strength of united peasant resistance and of Hindu-Muslim unity. It was among the first peasant struggles in which the educated middle class and the press stood by the peasants. Thus it helped prepare the ground for later political awakening in Bengal. Revise: Resistance and Rebellion: Characteristics and Analyses (প্রতিরোধ ও বিদ্রোহ) →
- 5.2Introduction: The colonial government took little interest in science and technical education for Indians, so educated Indians took their own initiatives. (1) IACS: Dr Mahendralal Sarkar, helped by Father Eugene Lafont, founded the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science in Calcutta in 1876 so that Indians could do scientific research with Indian funds. Regular lectures and laboratory work were arranged there. Later C. V. Raman discovered the 'Raman Effect' (1928) in its laboratory and won the Nobel Prize in 1930. (2) Bose Institute: Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose, famous for his research on radio waves and on the response of plants, founded the Bose Institute (Basu Bijnan Mandir) in 1917. He invented instruments such as the crescograph, and the institute became a centre of original research in physics and plant physiology. (3) Bengal Chemical: Acharya Prafulla Chandra Ray, professor of chemistry at Presidency College, started Bengal Chemical Works in 1892, which became Bengal Chemical and Pharmaceutical Works in 1901. It made medicines and chemicals in India and became a symbol of Swadeshi enterprise. He also wrote 'A History of Hindu Chemistry' and trained many young chemists. (4) University College of Science: With large donations from Taraknath Palit and Rashbehari Ghosh, Ashutosh Mukherjee set up the University College of Science of Calcutta University in 1914, where C. V. Raman, Meghnad Saha and Satyendranath Bose taught. (5) Bengal Technical Institute: During the Swadeshi movement the Bengal Technical Institute was set up in 1906 through Taraknath Palit's initiative to give Indians technical training. It joined the National Council of Education in 1910 and finally grew into Jadavpur University (1955). Assessment: These institutions were founded and run largely with Indian money and effort, outside government control. They reflected the spirit of self-reliance of the national movement. They proved that Indians could do original scientific work, reduced dependence on foreign goods and experts, and laid the foundation of modern scientific and technical research in India. Revise: Alternative Ideas and Initiatives (From mid-19th Century to the Early 20th Century): Characteristics and Observations
- 5.3Introduction: In 20th-century India the so-called 'untouchable' castes, now called Dalits, and other marginal groups faced social humiliation, denial of education and temple entry, and economic exploitation, so they organised to win dignity and rights. (1) Ambedkar's early struggle: Dr B. R. Ambedkar, the foremost leader of the Dalits, founded the Bahishkrit Hitakarini Sabha in 1924 to spread education and self-respect among the depressed classes. He voiced their grievances through papers such as 'Mook Nayak' and 'Bahishkrit Bharat'. In 1927 he led the Mahad Satyagraha, in which Dalits drank water from the public Chavdar tank, and he publicly burnt the Manusmriti as a protest against caste inequality. In 1930 he led a satyagraha for the right of Dalits to enter the Kalaram temple at Nasik. (2) Political rights: At the Round Table Conferences Ambedkar demanded separate electorates for the depressed classes, and the Communal Award of 1932 granted them. Gandhi began a fast unto death against this, and the Poona Pact (1932) replaced separate electorates with reserved seats in joint electorates. Gandhi then set up the Harijan Sevak Sangh against untouchability, while Ambedkar formed the Independent Labour Party (1936) and the All India Scheduled Castes Federation (1942). (3) Namasudra movement: In Bengal, inspired by Harichand Thakur's Matua sect, Guruchand Thakur led the Namasudras to demand education, government jobs and social dignity. They largely kept away from the Swadeshi movement, which they saw as led by upper-caste Hindus. (4) Rajbanshi movement: In North Bengal, Thakur Panchanan Barma founded the Kshatriya Samiti at Rangpur in 1910 to win a Kshatriya identity, education and self-respect for the Rajbanshis. (5) Santal movement: In Malda, Jitu Santal led the Santals from the 1920s against the oppression of zamindars and for social reform, until the movement was crushed by the police in 1932. Assessment: These movements often stood apart from the Congress-led national movement. Yet they made caste equality and social justice part of the national agenda and prepared the ground for the rights of Scheduled Castes and Tribes in the Constitution of independent India. Revise: Movements Organised by Women, Students and Marginal People in 20th Century India: Characteristics and Analyses
