West Bengal HS Exam 2027 Routine & Important Dates
From the official West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE) documents · last checked 14 October 2026
The Higher Secondary (HS) Examination (উচ্চ মাধ্যমিক) is the Class 12 board exam of West Bengal. It is conducted by the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE). HS 2027 follows the semester system. Class 12 has two board exams. Semester III is an MCQ exam answered on an OMR sheet. Semester IV is a written exam with short-answer and descriptive questions only. Your HS result is made from Class 12 marks only: Semester III, Semester IV and the practical or project marks. Class 11 marks are not added. For HS 2027, the Semester III exam was held from 21 September 2026 to 14 October 2026. The routine was changed twice, on 10 and 15 September 2026. The Semester III answer key came out on 14 October 2026. The Council's Annual Working Plan for 2026-27 says the Semester III result will come by the second week of November 2026. The same plan lists Semester IV enrolment from 2 to 23 December 2026, Semester IV admit cards on 13 January 2027, and project and practical exams from 22 January 2027 to 13 February 2027. The Council says it may change these dates. As of 15 October 2026, the Semester IV routine had not been published. The routine page of the Council shows only its title. For comparison, the HS 2026 Semester IV exam ran from 12 to 27 February 2026, and the result came out on 14 May 2026. If you fail a subject in Semester III, you can take the Semester III Supplementary exam in that subject along with Semester IV. A separate HS 2027 exam under the old yearly syllabus is also held for some earlier candidates. In April 2026 the Council called a social media claim that the semester system was cancelled for HS 2027 false.

Frequently asked questions
Which exam is the HS 2027 board exam in February or March?
It is the Class 12 Semester IV exam. The Semester III Supplementary exam is held along with it. Semester III for HS 2027 already took place from 21 September 2026 to 14 October 2026. As of 15 October 2026, WBCHSE had not published the Semester IV routine. For reference, the HS 2026 Semester IV exam ran from 12 to 27 February 2026.
How is my final HS result calculated?
Only Class 12 marks count: Semester III, Semester IV and the practical or project marks. Class 11 marks are not added. Each subject is out of 100. For example, Physics is 35 (Semester III) + 35 (Semester IV) + 30 (practical), and History is 40 + 40 + 20 (project). Your grand total is the best five subjects that you passed, so it is out of 500. Your overall grade is based on your final percentage.
What are the pass marks in HS under the semester system?
You need at least 30% in each of your two language subjects, and in three elective subjects, in Semester III (or its Supplementary) and Semester IV separately. You also need at least 30% in the practical or project of each subject. For a 40-mark paper, 30% is 12 marks. If you fall short in one compulsory subject by less than 5% of the full marks, marks can be moved to it from your highest compulsory subject.
How are grades given?
90 to 100 marks: A++ (Outstanding). 80 to 89: A+ (Excellent). 70 to 79: A (Very Good). 60 to 69: B+ (Good). 50 to 59: B (Satisfactory). 40 to 49: C (Fair). 30 to 39: P (Pass). Below 30: F (Fail). The same scale is used for each subject and for the overall result.
Will the Semester IV paper have MCQs?
No. Semester III is MCQ on an OMR sheet. Semester IV has only short-answer questions (2, 3 or 4 marks) and descriptive questions (5 to 10 marks), written in an answer booklet. In most subjects you get about twice as many questions as you must answer. In 2026, the paper was handed out at 9:50 am for 10 minutes of reading, and writing ran from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon.
Can I get my answer script re-checked?
For Semester IV, yes. You can apply online for Post Publication Scrutiny (PPS) or Post Publication Review (PPR), for theory papers only. In 2026, normal PPS cost ₹150 and normal PPR ₹200 per subject; Tatkal PPS cost ₹600 and Tatkal PPR ₹800. PPR was allowed in at most two subjects. The PPS/PPR rules cover Semester IV only. Semester III OMR sheets are checked by scanner, and for Semester III you can instead challenge the answer key online. For HS 2027 the fee is ₹200 per question per subject, and the portal is open from 11:59 pm on 27 October to 11:59 pm on 30 October 2026.
What happens if I fail a subject?
If you fail a subject in Semester III, you can take the Semester III Supplementary exam in that subject along with Semester IV in the same year. If you still do not pass, you sit that subject again in the next year's Semester III, and then its Supplementary exam. If you fail a subject in Semester IV, you clear it in the next academic year with the Semester IV exam. You must clear all papers within seven years of registration, counting the year of registration.
Can I improve my marks after passing?
Yes. A rule added on 24 February 2026 lets you sit the Semester IV exam again in one or more subjects in the next academic year, even after passing. You must surrender your mark sheet within 30 days of the result. You must also give an undertaking that you have not taken admission anywhere on the basis of that mark sheet. The new marks will be final.
What should I carry to the exam hall?
As per the 2026 guidelines, carry your admit card countersigned by your Head of Institution, your registration certificate, and blue or black ink pens. You may carry a pencil, eraser, sharpener and ruler in a transparent pouch, a transparent water bottle and a transparent clipboard. An analogue watch is allowed. Mobile phones, smart watches, calculators, bags and any printed or written paper are not allowed. In 2026, Semester IV examinees had to reach the venue by 9:00 am.
When will the HS 2027 result come?
Not announced yet. The Council's plan only says the result will be notified in due time. For reference, the HS 2026 result came out on 14 May 2026, and the HS 2025 result on 7 May 2025. The Semester III result of the HS 2026 batch came out on 31 October 2025. For HS 2027, the plan says the Semester III result will come by the second week of November 2026.
