West Bengal Police Constable: Exam Pattern, Syllabus & Free Preparation
The West Bengal Police Constable recruitment is a mass-scale state government exam conducted by the West Bengal Police Recruitment Board (WBPRB), Kolkata, to fill Constable posts in the West Bengal Police force (Kolkata Police constables are recruited separately). It is one of West Bengal's largest and most competitive recruitment drives — the 2024 cycle alone carried 11,749 vacancies against several lakh applicants across the state.
The exam is open to candidates aged 18–30 who have passed the Madhyamik (Class 10) examination from the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education or an equivalent board, and who can read, write and speak Bengali (permanent residents of the Darjeeling and Kalimpong hill sub-divisions are exempt from the Bengali requirement). Selection runs through several stages: a Preliminary Written Test (screening only), the Physical Measurement Test (PMT) and Physical Efficiency Test (PET), a Final Written Examination that counts toward merit, and finally an Interview/Personality Test. Final merit is out of 100 (85 written + 15 interview).
Is there negative marking in the exam?
Yes. Both the Preliminary and the Final Written papers deduct 1/4 (0.25) mark for every wrong answer. There is no penalty for questions you leave unanswered, so answer only when you are reasonably confident.
Is knowledge of Bengali required, and in what language is the exam?
Candidates must be able to read, write and speak Bengali, except permanent residents of the hill sub-divisions of Darjeeling and Kalimpong who are exempt.
