SSC CGL 2026 Exam Date, Notification & Vacancies

SSC CGL is a national exam held by the Staff Selection Commission. It fills Group B and Group C posts in central government ministries, departments and offices. Examples are Assistant Section Officer, Inspector (Income Tax, Central Excise, Posts), Auditor, Accountant, Tax Assistant and Junior Statistical Officer. CGL 2026 has two computer-based tiers. Tier-I is only a screening test. The final merit list uses Tier-II marks only. Any graduate can apply, but a few posts need a specific degree or subject. The SSC notice of 24 September 2026 gives 10,731 tentative vacancies. Tier-I runs from 30 September to 30 October 2026.

Vacancies
Tentative vacancies as on 24 September 2026 (SSC notice). Split by category: UR 4,412, SC 1,715, ST 804, OBC 2,772, EWS 1,028. Within these, 373 are for ex-servicemen and 464 for persons with benchmark disabilities. The first notice of 21 May 2026 said about 12,256 vacancies. SSC says final vacancies may change. SSC does not collect state-wise or zone-wise vacancies.
Frequently asked questions
When is the SSC CGL 2026 Tier-I exam?
SSC's notice of 12 September 2026 says Tier-I runs from 30 September to 30 October 2026. Your admit card is expected 2–3 days before your own exam date. Tier-II is tentatively planned for December 2026.
How many vacancies are there in SSC CGL 2026?
SSC lists 10,731 tentative vacancies as on 24 September 2026. The first notice of 21 May 2026 said about 12,256. Final numbers may still change.
What is the age limit for SSC CGL 2026?
Age is counted as on 1 August 2026. Depending on the post, the limit is 18–27, 20–30, 18–30 or 18–32 years (18–32 is for JSO). SC/ST get 5 more years, OBC 3 years and PwBD 10 years.
Is there negative marking?
Yes. In Tier-I, 0.50 mark is cut for each wrong answer (a correct answer gets 2 marks). In Tier-II Paper-I, 1 mark is cut per wrong answer in Sections I–III (a correct answer gets 3 marks). In Papers II and III, 0.50 mark is cut per wrong answer.
Do Tier-I marks count in the final selection?
No. Tier-I is only used to shortlist candidates for Tier-II. The final merit list uses Tier-II marks only: Sections I and II of Paper-I, plus Paper-II or Paper-III for the posts that need them.
What were the Tier-I cut-offs in CGL 2025?
For all posts except JSO and SI Grade-II, the corrected official cut-offs (out of 200) were: UR 136.40, OBC 130.37, EWS 127.42, SC 115.03 and ST 106.39. Cut-offs change every year.
