Frequently asked questions
When will NEET UG 2027 be held?
The date is not announced yet. When we checked on 19 October 2026, NTA had not released the NEET UG 2027 bulletin or exam date. NTA's exam calendar of 16 September 2026 lists exams only up to March 2027, and NEET UG is not in it. For reference, NEET UG 2025 was held on 4 May 2025, and NEET UG 2026 was first held on 3 May 2026. Watch neet.nta.nic.in for the official notice.
Is NEET UG 2027 computer-based (CBT)?
This has not been officially decided yet. NEET UG 2026 was a pen-and-paper (OMR) exam. Its bulletin says it was a single-day, single-shift exam in pen-and-paper mode, as in 2025, as per an NMC letter of 5 December 2025. Both the 3 May exam and the 21 June re-exam were pen and paper. When we checked on 19 October 2026, we found no official notice from NTA or the Ministry of Education that fixes the mode of NEET UG 2027. The latest official word we found is the Union of India's Supreme Court affidavit of 16 September 2026, which NTA published on nta.ac.in. It lists 'the possible migration of NEET (UG) from the pen-and-paper mode to Computer-Based Testing' as a matter still under study by the High-Powered Task Force (set up on 27 July 2026 and chaired by Shri Nandan Nilekani). It says this awaits the Task Force's recommendations, with the consultation and agreement of the Health Ministry and the National Medical Commission. Background: in June 2024 the Ministry of Education set up a High-Level Committee of Experts under Dr K. Radhakrishnan, former ISRO chairman. It gave its report on 21 October 2024 with 101 recommendations on exam reform, and a steering committee under him now monitors their implementation. You may see news reports that NEET will be computer-based from 2027, but we found no official notice confirming this. Wait for the NEET UG 2027 bulletin.
Why were there two NEET UG 2026 exam dates?
The exam was first held on 3 May 2026. On 12 May 2026, NTA cancelled it with the approval of the Government of India, after inputs and findings from law enforcement agencies, and the Government referred the matter to the CBI. A re-exam was held on 21 June 2026. Candidates did not need to register again or pay again. NTA also said it would refund the fee paid for the May exam, and it started the refunds in July 2026. The NEET UG 2026 result, declared on 16 July 2026, is based on the 21 June re-exam.
What is the NEET UG exam pattern and marking scheme?
NEET UG 2026 had one pen-and-paper paper of 180 compulsory MCQs for 720 marks, in 3 hours. Physics has 45 questions (180 marks), Chemistry has 45 (180 marks) and Biology (Botany and Zoology) has 90 (360 marks). A correct answer gets +4, a wrong answer −1 and an unanswered question 0. The mode for 2027 is not announced yet.
What is the age limit, and how many attempts are allowed?
For NEET UG 2026 you had to be at least 17 years old on or before 31 December 2026, that is, born on or before 31 December 2009. There is no upper age limit. The 2026 bulletin does not set any limit on the number of attempts.
Is there a minimum Class 12 percentage for NEET UG?
The NEET UG 2026 bulletin does not set one. You must pass Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology and English. The 2025 bulletin had asked for 50% in Physics, Chemistry and Biology together (40% for SC, ST and OBC-NCL), but this line is not in the 2026 bulletin. States can still apply their own rules for state quota seats.
What score was needed to qualify NEET UG 2026?
General and EWS candidates needed the 50th percentile, which was 213 marks out of 720. SC, ST and OBC-NCL candidates needed the 40th percentile, which was 177 marks. General/EWS PwBD candidates needed the 45th percentile (194 marks), and reserved PwBD candidates the 40th percentile (177 marks). In all, 11,21,185 candidates qualified. Qualifying only puts you in the merit list. It does not guarantee a seat.
Who does counselling after the NEET result?
NTA only gives the All India Rank. The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) at mcc.nic.in runs counselling for 15% All India Quota seats, all seats in AIIMS, JIPMER, central universities and deemed universities, and the ESIC Insured Persons quota. AACCC runs All India Quota counselling for BAMS, BSMS, BUMS and BHMS. States run counselling for their own quota seats. In 2026, MCC held Round 1 in August and Rounds 2 and 3 in September, and the stray vacancy round result is due on 19 October 2026.
How many MBBS seats are there in India?
NMC's seat matrix for 2026-27 (as on 18 September 2026) lists 1,40,664 MBBS seats in 839 colleges: 64,121 in government colleges and 76,543 in private colleges. This leaves out seats in Institutes of National Importance such as AIIMS and JIPMER. It can still change after appeals.
