WBPSC Clerkship Exam Date, Notification & Vacancies

The Clerkship Examination is held by the Public Service Commission, West Bengal (WBPSC). It fills Lower Division Assistant (LDA) and Lower Division Clerk (LDC) posts, and similar posts, in the Secretariat, Directorates, district offices and regional offices (Kolkata included) of the Government of West Bengal. The minimum qualification is a Madhyamik (Class 10) pass. There are two written stages. Part-I is an objective MCQ paper of 100 marks. Part-II is a written (descriptive) paper of 100 marks: 50 marks in English and 50 marks in Bengali, Hindi, Urdu, Nepali or Santali. Candidates who clear both parts then take a qualifying computer typing test. The merit list uses the total marks of Part-I and Part-II. The post is in Pay Level 6 (Rs. 22,700 to Rs. 58,500) under ROPA 2019. The latest cycle is the Clerkship Examination 2023. Its Part-I was held on 16 and 17 November 2024 and its Part-II on 28 December 2025.

Vacancies

The 2023 advertisement (dated 4 December 2023) says the number of vacancies will be announced later. No official vacancy count for the 2023 cycle was found on the WBPSC website as of 4 October 2026. For reference only: in the previous cycle (Clerkship 2019, Advt. No. 05/2019), WBPSC listed 7,227 vacancies in its result notice dated 30 September 2021.

Frequently asked questions

Who can apply for the WBPSC Clerkship exam?

You need a Madhyamik (Class 10) pass or an equivalent. You must be 18 to 40 years old on the cut-off date (1 January 2023 for the 2023 cycle). You must be able to read, write and speak Bengali, unless your mother tongue is Nepali. You also need basic computer skills and a typing speed of 20 words per minute in English or 10 in Bengali. SC/ST of West Bengal get 5 extra years and OBC (non-creamy layer) of West Bengal get 3 extra years.

What are the stages of the exam?

There are three stages. Part-I is an objective MCQ paper of 100 marks (English 30, General Studies 40, Arithmetic 30) in 1 hour 30 minutes. Part-II is a 1-hour written paper of 100 marks: 50 for English and 50 for one language (Bengali, Hindi, Urdu, Nepali or Santali). Those who clear both parts take a qualifying computer typing test. The merit list uses Part-I plus Part-II marks.

Is there negative marking?

Yes, in Part-I. Each correct answer gets 1 mark and 0.25 mark is cut for each wrong answer. In the 2023 cycle, the Part-I cut-off for General candidates was 49 out of 100.

What happens in the typing test?

It is held only for candidates who qualify in Part-I and Part-II. You must type on a computer at 20 words per minute in English or 10 words per minute in Bengali, as chosen in your application. It is qualifying only. Candidates whose mother tongue is not Bengali or Nepali are also checked on Bengali at this stage.

Can I take Hindi, Urdu, Nepali or Santali instead of Bengali in Part-II?

Yes. Group-B of Part-II can be written in Bengali, Hindi, Urdu, Nepali or Santali. But if you take a language other than Bengali, you must pass a departmental examination in Bengali during your probation before you are confirmed.

What is the latest status, and when is the next Clerkship exam?

For the 2023 cycle, Part-I was held on 16 and 17 November 2024 and Part-II on 28 December 2025. The Part-II result and the typing test have not been announced yet. WBPSC issued an indicative notice for the Clerkship Examination 2024 (Advt. No. 12/2024) on 23 December 2024. Its detailed advertisement and application dates are not out yet, so keep checking psc.wb.gov.in.
