WB Police Constable Exam Date, Notification & Vacancies

The West Bengal Police Recruitment Board (WBPRB) hires Constables for West Bengal Police. The latest drive is called 'Recruitment to the post of Constables in West Bengal Police - 2024'. It is open to male, female and third gender candidates and has 11,749 posts. Selection has four steps: an OMR-based written exam (85 marks), a Physical Measurement Test (PMT), a Physical Efficiency Test (PET) and an interview (15 marks). PMT and PET are pass/fail only. The final merit list adds the written and interview marks (out of 100). After that, selected candidates go through a character check and a medical exam. The board published the Final Merit List of provisionally selected candidates on 24 September 2026. Several High Court cases about this drive have been pending, and on 10 September 2026 the board said that any steps in this recruitment will abide by the result of writ petition WPA 2877 of 2026.

That notice changed the category-wise split after West Bengal's new OBC list. The total stayed the same as in the 6 March 2024 notice. Frequently asked questions

Is there a preliminary exam in WB Police Constable 2024?

No. The 2024 drive had one written exam (85 marks), then PMT, PET and an interview. Earlier drives (Constable and Lady Constable 2020, Lady Constable 2023) had a separate preliminary test first.

How many vacancies were there in the 2024 drive?

11,749 posts: 8,212 for men and 3,537 for women. The category-wise split was revised on 12 August 2026, but the total did not change.

Is there negative marking in the written exam?

Yes. There are 85 questions worth 1 mark each, and you get 1 hour. Each wrong answer cuts 1/4 mark.

What height and running standards do I need?

Men need 167 cm (160 cm for Gorkha, Garhwali, Rajbanshi and ST) and must run 1600 m in 6 min 30 sec. Women need 160 cm (152 cm for those groups) and must run 800 m in 4 min. You get only one chance at the run.

What age and education do I need?

You must be 18 to 30 years old as on 1 January 2024. SC/ST get 5 extra years and OBC gets 3. You must have passed Madhyamik or an equivalent exam and know Bengali. The Bengali rule does not apply to people from the Darjeeling and Kalimpong hill sub-divisions.

Has a new WB Police Constable notification come out?

Not as of 4 October 2026. The 2024 drive's final result came out on 24 September 2026. Check prb.wb.gov.in for new notices.
