Variation (ভেদ) — quick revision notes

Variation describes how one variable changes when another changes. If x varies directly as y, x = ky; if x varies inversely as y, xy = k; and if x varies jointly as y and z, x = kyz, where k is a non-zero constant called the variation constant. Find k from one given pair of values first, then use it to find the unknown value.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Writing x = k + y (adding the constant) instead of x = ky.
  • Using x/y = constant when the question says 'inversely' — in inverse variation the product xy stays constant.
  • In real-life problems, check which way the quantities move: more workers need fewer days (inverse), not more days.
  • Forgetting to square when a quantity varies as the square of another (e.g. y ∝ x²).
