General Studies Paper I (200 marks)

  • Current events of national and international importance
  • History of India and the Indian National Movement
  • Geography of India and the world: physical, social and economic
  • Indian polity and governance: Constitution, political system, Panchayati Raj, public policy, rights issues
  • Economic and social development: sustainable development, poverty, inclusion, demographics, social sector schemes
  • General issues on environment, ecology, biodiversity and climate change (no specialist knowledge needed)
  • General science

General Studies Paper II / CSAT (200 marks, qualifying at 33%)

  • Reading comprehension
  • Interpersonal skills, including communication skills
  • Logical reasoning and analytical ability
  • Decision making and problem solving
  • General mental ability
  • Basic numeracy: numbers, their relations, orders of magnitude (Class 10 level)
  • Data interpretation: charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency (Class 10 level)

Paper I: Essay

  • Essays on more than one topic
  • Stay close to the topic, arrange ideas in order and write briefly
  • Marks are given for clear and exact expression

Paper II: General Studies I (Heritage, Culture, History, Geography, Society)

  • Indian art forms, literature and architecture from ancient to modern times
  • Modern Indian history from about the mid-18th century: key events, people, issues
  • The freedom struggle: its stages and contributors from all regions
  • Consolidation and reorganisation after independence
  • World history from the 18th century: industrial revolution, world wars, redrawn borders, colonisation and decolonisation, communism, capitalism, socialism
  • Main features and diversity of Indian society
  • Women and women's groups, population, poverty, development, urbanisation and their remedies
  • Effects of globalisation on Indian society

  • Separation of powers, dispute redressal bodies; comparison with other countries' constitutions

  • Main features of the Representation of People's Act

Paper V: General Studies IV (Ethics, Integrity and Aptitude)

  • Aptitude and core civil service values: integrity, impartiality, non-partisanship, objectivity, dedication, empathy, tolerance, compassion for weaker sections
  • Emotional intelligence and its use in administration
  • Contributions of moral thinkers of India and the world
  • Public service values and ethics in administration: dilemmas, laws and conscience, accountability, ethics in international relations and funding, corporate governance
  • Probity in governance: RTI, codes of ethics and conduct, citizens' charters, work culture, service quality, use of public funds, corruption

Papers VI and VII: Optional Subject (choose one)

  • Literature of one language: Assamese, Bengali, Bodo, Dogri, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri, Konkani, Maithili, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Nepali, Odia, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Santhali, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu or English
  • Standard is honours-degree level (above a bachelor's degree, below a master's). For Engineering, Medical Science and Law it is bachelor's-degree level.

Interview (275 marks)

  • Checks whether you are suited to a career in public service
  • The board has your career record and asks about matters of general interest
  • Qualities checked include mental alertness, critical thinking, clear and logical expression, balanced judgement, range and depth of interests, leadership and social skills, and intellectual and moral integrity
  • It is a guided conversation, not a cross-examination or a test of subject knowledge
  • Interest in current events in your state, India and the world is expected
