From the official Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) documents · last checked 18 October 2026
The National Defence Academy and Naval Academy Examination (NDA & NA) is held by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) twice a year. It is open to students who have passed Class 12 or are in Class 12. It picks cadets for the Army, Navy and Air Force wings of the National Defence Academy (NDA) at Khadakwasla, Pune, and for the 10+2 Cadet Entry Scheme at the Indian Naval Academy (INA), Ezhimala. Both unmarried men and unmarried women can apply. Selection has two steps. First, UPSC holds a written exam with two papers: Mathematics (300 marks) and the General Ability Test (600 marks). Then the Services Selection Board (SSB) holds an intelligence and personality test worth 900 marks, and a medical exam follows. The final merit list is made out of 1800 marks. The latest notified cycle is NDA & NA (II) 2026. It has 394 approximate vacancies (370 for men and 24 for women) for the 158th NDA course and the 120th INA course, both starting on 1 July 2027. Its written exam was held on 13 September 2026, and the written result came out on 9 October 2026. NDA training lasts 3 years. Cadets get a degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU): B.A./B.Sc. cadets get it at the end of NDA, and B.Tech cadets get it after their later training. Cadets then train further at their own service academy (IMA Dehradun, INA Ezhimala, or the Air Force Academy, Hyderabad / Air Force Technical College, Bengaluru) before they become officers. Naval Academy (10+2 Cadet Entry) cadets do a 4-year B.Tech course at Ezhimala.
