Think of a pond near your village. The sunlight, water, and mud are non-living. The algae, fish, frogs, and tiny microbes are living. None of them survives alone. The algae make food from sunlight, the fish eat the algae, and when things die, microbes break them down and return the nutrients to the mud. This whole working unit of living things plus their non-living surroundings is an ecosystem. This chapter shows you how energy and life move through it, and why saving variety of life matters.

What an ecosystem is made of

An ecosystem has two kinds of parts. Abiotic (non-living) parts are things like sunlight, temperature, water, air, and soil minerals. Biotic (living) parts are all the organisms. The living parts are grouped by the job they do, not by their size. Getting these jobs clear is the base for everything else in this chapter.

Consumers by rank

  • Primary consumers = herbivores (eat plants), e.g. deer, grasshopper.
  • Secondary consumers = eat herbivores, e.g. frog, small snake.
  • Tertiary / top consumers = eat other carnivores, e.g. eagle, tiger.
  • Detritivores (like earthworms) feed directly on dead matter, while decomposers (bacteria, fungi) break it down chemically; both recycle nutrients and keep the cycle running.

Energy flow and the 10% rule

A food chain shows who eats whom, step by step: grass to grasshopper to frog to snake to eagle. Each feeding step is called a trophic level. Producers are the first trophic level. Energy enters as sunlight, gets fixed by producers, and passes upward. But this flow leaks a lot at every step.

🧠 A leaking bucket line

Imagine people passing water up a hill in buckets, but each person spills 90% and hands only 10% to the next. By the top, almost nothing is left. Energy in an ecosystem works the same way. This is why food chains are usually short (4 to 5 links) and why top predators are few.

💡 Lindeman's 10% law: only about 10% of the energy at one trophic level is passed to the next. The other 90% is lost mostly as heat and used for the organism's own life processes.

Two must-remember rules

  • Energy flow is one-way (unidirectional): sun to producers to consumers. It does not cycle back.
  • Nutrients (like carbon, nitrogen) DO cycle: decomposers return them to the soil to be used again.
  • A food web is many food chains linked together, which makes an ecosystem more stable.

Ecological pyramids

An ecological pyramid is a simple bar-diagram of trophic levels stacked up, showing number, biomass (living weight), or energy at each level. The key exam point is which pyramids can flip upside down and which cannot.

Biodiversity: the variety of life

Biodiversity means the variety of living things. It is measured at three levels. Genetic diversity is variety within one species (like many varieties of rice). Species diversity is the number of different species in an area. Ecosystem diversity is the variety of habitats, such as forests, wetlands, deserts, and grasslands in a region.

Terms UPSC loves to test

  • Endemic species: found only in one place and nowhere else on Earth (e.g. Nilgiri tahr).
  • Keystone species: has a very large effect on its ecosystem relative to its numbers; removing it can collapse the system.
  • Ecotone: the transition zone where two ecosystems meet (like where a forest meets a grassland); often rich in species (edge effect).
  • Ecological niche: the exact role and position of a species in its ecosystem.

Biodiversity hotspots and India

A biodiversity hotspot is a region that is extremely rich in species yet badly threatened. To qualify, a region must have at least 1,500 endemic species of vascular plants and must have already lost 70% or more of its original natural habitat. India has four hotspots: the Himalaya, the Western Ghats and Sri Lanka, the Indo-Burma region, and Sundaland (which includes the Nicobar Islands).

How we conserve biodiversity

Conservation is done in two broad ways. In-situ means protecting species in their natural home. Ex-situ means protecting them outside their natural home. Both are needed together.

ℹ️ India's first Biosphere Reserve was Nilgiri, set up in 1986. Biosphere Reserves have a strictly protected core zone, a buffer zone around it, and an outer transition zone where limited human activity is allowed.
