Biological Classification: The Five Kingdoms Explained

Imagine millions of ingredients dumped into one huge kitchen. To cook anything, you first sort them onto shelves - grains, spices, vegetables, dairy. Biologists face the same problem with millions of living things. Classification is simply putting organisms onto the right 'shelves' so we can study, compare and name them sensibly.

Early scientists used just two kingdoms - Plantae and Animalia - but that forced bacteria, fungi and single-celled organisms into groups where they did not fit. In 1969, R.H. Whittaker proposed the Five Kingdom Classification: Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae and Animalia. He sorted organisms using five sensible criteria: cell structure (prokaryotic or eukaryotic), body organisation, mode of nutrition (autotrophic or heterotrophic), reproduction, and evolutionary (phylogenetic) relationships.

Monera and Protista - the microscopic kingdoms

Biological classification narrows step by step from Kingdom, the broadest group with many organisms, down to Species, the most specific level naming a single kind of organism.

Monera contains all the prokaryotes - organisms whose cells have no true (membrane-bound) nucleus. These are the bacteria, the most abundant micro-organisms on Earth. They fall into two groups: archaebacteria, which survive extreme habitats like salty lakes (halophiles), hot acidic springs (thermoacidophiles) and marshes (methanogens) thanks to a special cell-wall structure; and eubacteria or 'true bacteria', which include the photosynthetic cyanobacteria (blue-green algae such as Nostoc). Bacterial nutrition covers everything - some are autotrophic (photosynthetic or chemosynthetic) while many are heterotrophic decomposers or pathogens.

Protista is the kingdom of single-celled eukaryotes - a bridge between the simple Monera and the complex plants, animals and fungi. Key groups include: chrysophytes (diatoms, whose glassy silica walls fit together like a soap-box and pile up as 'diatomaceous earth'); dinoflagellates (marine cells whose sudden blooms cause toxic red tides); euglenoids like Euglena (no cell wall, photosynthetic in light but heterotrophic in the dark); slime moulds (saprophytic, forming spore-bearing bodies); and protozoans (heterotrophic hunters or parasites such as Amoeba, Paramoecium and the malaria-causing Plasmodium).

Fungi, Plantae and Animalia

Fungi are heterotrophs with cell walls made of chitin; most are multicellular threads (hyphae) living as saprophytes (on dead matter), parasites, or symbiotic partners - examples include mushrooms, moulds like Penicillium, and yeast. Plantae are the multicellular, cellulose-walled autotrophs that make their own food by photosynthesis (a few, like the insect-trapping Venus flytrap and the parasite Cuscuta, are exceptions). Animalia are multicellular eukaryotes with no cell wall that feed by holozoic nutrition (ingesting food) and usually move and respond quickly using nerves and muscles.

โ„น๏ธ Not everything fits the five kingdoms. Viruses (non-cellular; a protein coat around DNA or RNA - never both - reproducing only inside a host), viroids (free infectious RNA with no protein coat, cause potato spindle tuber disease), prions (infectious mis-folded proteins, cause mad-cow disease) and lichens (a partnership of an alga and a fungus, and excellent air-pollution indicators) are all left out of Whittaker's scheme.
