Preliminary Examination

Offline, OMR sheet, multiple-choice questions · 90 minutes

Marking: Each question carries 2 marks. For each wrong answer, one-fourth of that question's marks is cut.

  • The question paper is set in English and Bengali.
  • This is a screening test for the PMT & PET only. Its marks are not added to the final merit list.
  • WBPRB sets the minimum cut-off marks for each category and post, based on the number of vacancies.

Physical Measurement Test (PMT) & Physical Efficiency Test (PET)

On-ground physical tests at venues chosen by WBPRB · PET run: men 800 m in 3 minutes; women 400 m in 2 minutes; transgender candidates 400 m in 1 minute 40 seconds

Marking: Qualifying only. You must pass both the PMT and the PET to sit the final written exam.

  • The PMT comes first. Only those who pass the PMT can take the PET.
  • Gorkhas, Rajbansis, Garwalis and Scheduled Tribe candidates get lower height, chest and weight standards.
  • If you disagree with your PMT result, you can appeal in writing to the Chairperson of the Selection Board/Committee on the same day only. No later appeal is accepted.
  • The Board may measure your height again at any later stage, including the Personality Test.

Final Combined Competitive Examination

Offline written exam with conventional (long-answer) questions · 4 hours in total, all on one day: Paper I 2 hours, Paper II 1 hour, Paper III 1 hour

Marking: Long written answers. No negative marking is mentioned. WBPRB may set pass marks for any paper and for the total of all three papers.

  • The Paper I question paper is set in English, Bengali and Nepali. You may answer in any one of these, but all answers must be in the same language.
  • In Paper III, the translation part carries 20 marks.
  • These marks count towards the final merit list.

Personality Test

Marking: Minimum pass mark is 8 out of 30. If you score less than 8, you are out, whatever your written marks.

  • A limited number of candidates are called, in order of merit from the final written exam.
  • Final merit = marks in the three final written papers (200) + Personality Test marks (30).
  • Tie rule: higher final written exam total ranks first, then higher Paper I marks, then the older candidate.
